Name of the Project
Koruson 2.

Location
On the border of the Northern and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Envusa Energy, a joint venture between Anglo American and EDF power solutions.

Project Description
Envusa Energy completed the project financing for its first three wind and solar projects, collectively known as Koruson 2, in February 2024.

The renewable-energy projects will have a total capacity of 520 MW of wind and solar electricity generation, and will comprise the Umsobomvu Wind Farm (140 MW), the Hartebeesthoek Wind Farm (140 MW) and the Mooi Plaats solar project (240 MW).

When fully operational, the Koruson 2 cluster is expected to abate about 2.2-million tonnes a year of CO2

The power supplied by the cluster is intended to displace coal-based grid electricity at Anglo American’s platinum, iron-ore and diamond operations in South Africa. Anglo American Platinum has contracted 461 MW, Kolomela mine 11 MW and Venetia mine 48 MW under 20-year offtake agreements with Envusa Energy.

Potential Job Creation
The construction phase generated thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape. Envusa has also committed R20-million to socioeconomic development for the Inxuba Yethemba and Umsobomvu communities.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
The Mooi Plaats solar PV facility and the Umsobomvu Wind Farm reached commercial operation by April 2026. As at April 9, 2026, Hartebeesthoek remained on track to reach commercial operation in June 2026, completing the 520 MW cluster.

Latest Developments
Envusa’s 140 MW Umsobomvu Wind Farm reached commercial operation shortly after the 240 MW Mooi Plaats solar PV project in April, bringing 380 MW of the 520 MW Koruson 2 cluster into commercial operation.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Not stated.
